Premature ejaculation is a problem of men, where they ejaculate (release semen) much before, then when they want to. This is a very common condition seen worldwide and can occur due to many conditions.
Dapoxetine is an allopathic drug that was specifically researched and created for this condition. Over the past 20-30 years, the premature ejaculation (PE) treatment segment, has expanded to include drug treatment.
Dapoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor and is first oral pharmacological agent used to treat Premature Ejaculation. It has been approved by European medical association and is widely used in American and south Asian countries.
Mechanism of Action:
Dapoxetine works by inhibiting the serotonin transport and helps in increasing Serotonin’s action at the post synaptic cleft, and as a consequence it promotes ejaculatory delay. As a member of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) family, Dapoxetine was initially created as an Antidepressant. However, unlike other SSRIs, Dapoxetine is absorbed and eliminated rapidly in the body. Its fast-acting property makes it suitable for the treatment of PE but not as an Antidepressant.
Dapoxetine is used in the treatment of Premature Ejaculation. This medicine is used to treat acute to chronic premature ejaculation. It helps in increasing the time taken to ejaculate and helps in achieving better control during an intercourse.
The pharmacological dose for Dapoxetine is 30mg once a day and in severe cases of PE it is advised to take Dapoxetine 30mg twice a day. (Only as per Doctors advice). It had to be taken orally 1-3 hours before action is desired.
Dapoxetine is widely absorbed through oral route and attains bioavailability of 42% in blood. It is metabolized by liver via Glucuronidation and excreted through urine.
It has to be avoided in patients of significant pathological cardiac conditions such as chronic heart failure, significant ischaemic heart disease, moderate and severe liver impairment.
It is a relatively safer drug and below mentioned symptoms may occur sometimes.
